Escape to an Island in the Mexican Caribbean

Everybody thinks I live on an eternal vacation, but that’s far from true. Besides my annual vacations, I usually travel during the weekends, and of course living in Cancun helps me to visit incredible places and still feel like a tourist. So, this time, I took a ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel Island to celebrate life and shout at the world: I’m a Caribbean boy!

I took the Barcos Caribe ferry, which is $135 pesos one way, and only $69 when having a local ID. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the island and even though I got dizzy, I still admired the ocean’s tones of blue and the panoramic view of Playa del Carmen, totally worth it!

I stayed at Tamarindo Bed & Breakfast, which I booked through Airbnb for $1,466 pesos a night. The place was really nice and picturesque. It wasn’t a beachfront house, but it had a great location in the town center. Don’t ask me why, but I thought that the island was kinda small, so I was surprised that it is actually huge! So I had to rent a car, $900 pesos for 24 hours.

The day was super hot so I was eager to get to the beach. I headed to SkyReef, a cool beach club, very Caribbean style, with an incredible spot for snorkeling.

I had everything: the ocean, a beer, and an incredible sunset… *Insert song: Coldplay – Paradise.
Later that night I strolled around the city center & the main plaza, I had the chance to listen to a live music show! I was ready to sleep after a perfect day.

In the morning I woke up feeling very relaxed and lazy, but in the mood to have a plentiful breakfast, which I did in Jeanie’s Waffles. An oceanfront restaurant with a great view. I even had the chance to snorkel for a little while. I had two more hours to spare before turning back the car, so I went to Playa Azul to enjoy some shrimps while enjoying the beach.

Of course, there are a lot more activities to do on the island, but what more could I ask for? After a short escape the island I was feeling relaxed and happy. Have you been to Cozumel? Share your experience with me!
